Frequently Asked Questions
Healthcare professional FAQs
How do I complete a Home FAST risk assessment?
The Home FAST assessment needs to be administered by observing the features of a person’s home. It is not possible to complete without a home visit. Walking around the home and asking the older person to demonstrate aspects of the tool will enable you to answer the questions. Identify responses as either: yes, no or not applicable (n/a). You may also include comments or other relevant information to refer to later. You will need about 45 minutes to complete the Home FAST.
How does the scoring work?
A person receives one point for each “no” response given. At the end of the assessment they are given an overall score out of 25. Risks are ranked as low, medium and high, depending on the number of points received. We know that a score of 9 hazards and above is associated with a higher risk of falling.
Can I use the Home FAST as an outcome measure?
Yes. You can do an initial visit and score the Home FAST. After implementing any modifications to the home or providing advice to the older person, you can repeat the Home FAST to see if the score has improved. Depending on the circumstances, some items may not be easily modifiable, so the score may not be different for all of the items.

Completion time varies. There are 25 questions in total. We suggest allowing up to half an hour to answer them all.
What do the different scores mean?
Based on research, we have identified home hazard scores that mean a person is at increased risk of falling. A red score means that a person is at high risk of falling and should look at modifying some aspects of their home environment to reduce their risk. An amber score indicates moderate risk of falling and modifications should also be considered to reduce this risk. A green score indicates that a person has the same level of risk as anyone else in the community because of their home environment. There may still be smaller modifications that would make the home even safer.
What should I do once I know my score?
The scores provided on this website give a general an indication of your risk of falling.
Risk levels range from low, medium and high. For each problem-area identified you will be given solutions on how to reduce the risk. Even if you have a low risk of falling there are still things you can do around you home to reduce the risk further.
If you are concerned about your risk of falling or your health in general please speak to your doctor. They will be able to refer you to a local service provider who may be able to help with any of the recommendations. Taking a copy of your results will help.
